District IX Spotlight
Congratulations to Mrs. Carolina Lopez as she makes her way to Socorro High School as their new Student Activities Director! She made a lasting impact where she was before, in Canutillo High School, to her students and community, and her dedication to education will be missed greatly. We wish her all the best in her new journey, and we know she’ll continue to inspire students just as she did in Canutillo!
Where were you working before and what did you do?
Previous to being Socorro HS Student Activities Director, I was at Canutillo HS for 16 years. I started out teaching AP World History and coaching volleyball. In 2014, along with my history classes I began teaching Student Leadership (while being the StuCo advisor). "The rest is HISTORY, haha."
What's your favorite way in which StuCo impacts the school?
StuCo is like an invisible hand that's got an impact on academics, sports, clubs, admin, etc. So, I love how we have to work together, planning and communicating ideas to incorporate to other group and communities. It also allows for students to have to interact with themselves and other adults, that might not be on their schedule, to help create that sense of unity.
What's your favorite part of being an advisor?
Absolutely making those connections with students. For many students, school doesn't always leave positive memories. So, if I can create a memory for them that an adult at school cared and looked out for them, then I feel fulfilled. To quote one of my favorite bands, the Avett Brothers, "leave behind the world a better way" is what I strive to do.
What are you looking forward to working at your new school?
I just look forward to getting to know the students and helping them to create a great 4 years of leadership and memories! It's also been so awesome to be welcomed so enthusiastically by admin, teachers and students alike.
What's a fun fact about you?
I was the 2008 UTEP women's intramural swimming champion and I once won a Valentine Day radio contest because of my mohawk hairstyle.
